I have been certified to dive since 1993 and stuck to warm water until I got drysuit certified in 2003 - a great decision, since now I can dive almost anywhere!!
I never had any interest in cameras or photography - above or below water. In 2005, my husband brought home an underwater camera -a little Sea and Sea point and shoot. I didn't really care one way or the other - in fact, I recall getting PO'd at him because he had his face in the viewfinder during a dive!!! In 2006, I got a Canon housing for our Canon point and shoot, just so I'd have something, too - but I still didn't really use it much locally. However, later that year, on a trip to the Solomon Islands, my husband flooded his Sea and Sea - I stole the strobe that went with it and hooked it up to the Canon...VOILA - an obsession was born.
There were two very gifted underwater photographers (
http://underwa.ter.net/) on our trip to the Solomons - after seeing their work, I was inspired! I began taking my little Canon with me every time I dove.
I took a big (read: expensive and frustrating, not to mention very, very heavy!) step in November 2007 by buying a used dSLR rig. I try to bring my camera on every dive, locally and while travelling. I am lucky - I live in Southern California and can dive a LOT!
I am currently shooting with a Canon Eos 20D in a Subal housing with two Sea and Sea YS250 strobes.
